Drama Down Memory Lane

Memories of the early days of one of Sligo’s longest running drama groups will return when they stage an exhibition on Saturday. Sligo Drama Circle will display a pictorial history of their 56-year existence in an exhibition in the Market Yard on Saturday afternoon from 1pm to 5pm. The drama group has accumulated a wealth of photographs, posters, programmes and memorabilia which chart the course of their dramatic history over the past 56 years on Sligo stages and elsewhere.

They recently mounted the exhibition on a permanent basis in their Drama Centre in the Market Yard and are anxious that the Sligo public get a chance to view it. A spokesman said, “People are invited to come along any time during the afternoon to take a pictorial trip down memory lane. Friends old and new will be most welcome to come along. Refreshments will be served”.

Sligo Drama Circle was founded in 1956 to promote good standards of community theatre and increase the range of plays available to Sligo audiences. Their first play was produced in November 1956 and since then, the Drama Circle has produced the works of major Irish, European and American playwrights. The Drama Circle grew out of the Sligo Unknown Players which would be well known to many of the older generation.

The Drama Circle took occupancy of their premises in the Market Yard in 1999 and has been rehearsing, performing, and generally promoting the dramatic legacy which has been handed down by many great servants of drama in Sligo.

The exhibition is open to the public on Saturday from 1-5pm in their centre in the Market Yard.
