Sligo Drama Circle Presents “Peg O’ My Heart”
Sligo Drama Circle brings a slice of “Downton Abbey” to the stage of the Hawk’s Well Theatre this July for its summer production of J. Hartley Manners’ “Peg O’ My Heart”. Set in 1912, the story unfolds in the English country estate of the snobbish Chichester family who have just learned that they have been pauperised by the failure of their bank. Poverty is averted by the arrival of an uncultured but pretty and bright Irish cousin, Peg O’Connell. Peg, unknown to herself, has been left a fortune in which the Chichesters will share, but only if they undertake to teach her to be a lady. Things get complicated when the gentlemen around Peg begin to express a romantic interest in her. What ensues includes conflict, romance and lots of laughter!
Fully costumed and with a cast of nine, this timeless comedy is perfect light-hearted entertainment for a summer’s evening. Director Máire Hynes has assembled an experienced cast along with some newcomers for the period drama: Angela Maguire plays Mrs Chichester; Darragh Macken and Orla Mc Sharry play her son Alaric and daughter Ethel respectively; Catherine Bell plays the part of Peg; Michael Goodman plays Mr. Hawkes the solicitor; Barry Deignan plays Jerry; Damien Quinn plays Christian Brent; the two servants, Jarvis and Bennett are played by Ultan Burke and Sarah Burns. The play promises to be an entertaining night’s theatre.
