Drama Circle Presents Oscar Wilde Comedy
On Tuesday night in the Town Hall, the curtain rose on Sligo Drama Circle’s production of Oscar Wilde’s classic comedy “The Importance of Being Earnest”. “The Importance of Being Earnest” is a farce of perfect charm. For brilliancy of wit and for the perfection of its construction, it may fairly be ranked with the very greatest of English comedies. Set in the glittering era of the 1890’s, a period of English social history with which television viewers of “Upstairs Downstairs” and “The Forsythe Saga” are already familiar, “The Importance of Being Earnest” never fails to delight and amuse.
Mrs. Kay Guinane, who has delighted audiences at Feiseanna with her character sketch of the redoubtable and outrageous dowager Lady Bracknell, returns to this part in Joe Meehan’s new production for the Drama Circle. Mary Mc Donagh, Sheila Horan, Ann Mc Dermott, John Caheny, Walter Mc Donagh, Eamon Martin, Columb Mc Bride, Frankie Branigan and David Johnson make up the cast.
“The Importance of Being Earnest” was rapturously received by critics and audiences alike when first performed in February of 1895. It established Oscar Wilde on the pinnacle of his success as the most popular dramatist of his day. The last play he wrote, it is the best known and deservedly the best loved of all his works.
