Peg O’ My Heart
“Peg O’ My Heart”, that ageless melodrama, returns to the Hawk’s Well Theatre Sligo on Wednesday August 6th. Staged at that same venue some weeks ago, this comedy of a will, a waif and a set of wily relatives delighted audiences of both locals and tourists alike. This is the play that made a fortune for its author, J. Hartley Manners. Its success surpassed the wildest dreams of both Manners and his actress wife, Laurette Taylor. This delightful romantic comedy made Laurette a star of stage and screen. Judging from the marvellous reception and support for this attractive production last month, S.D.C. can confidently promise a good night’s entertainment and fun.
This revival marks the first night in a programme of entertainment presented by the Hawk’s Well in conjunction with the 27th Yeats Summer School. As the programme progresses, a number of renouned Irish poets, writers and musicians will read and perfrom, amongst them Leitrim novelist John Mc Gahern and Dublin’s dearest raconteur Éamon Mac Thomais.
The original cast of “Peg O’ My Heart” remains, Ann Mc Detrmott, Joe Meehan, Sheila Horan, Cliona Howley, Malcolm Hamilton, Cormac Sheridan, John Gaffney, John O’ Dea and Ann Feehily excel under the precise direction of Walter Mc Donagh.
