After the huge success of Oscar Wilde’s “The Importance of Being Earnest” in the Hawk’s Well Theatre in November 2024, Sligo Drama Circle is delighted to announce that our Spring 2025 production, also in the Hawk’s Well Theatre, will be John B. Keane’s acclaimed debut play, “SIVE”. We last performed this play in 2010, so it is an opportune time to re-introduce this classic drama to a new audience.

Set against the harsh poverty and difficult times of 1950s Ireland, “Sive” tells the story of an illegitimate 18-year old girl being forced into an arranged marriage with an elderly man by her relatives. Sive lives with her uncle, his mother and his bitter wife. She is in love with a local young man, but a conniving matchmaker convinces Sive’s uncle and his wife to agree to the marriage of Sive for the sum of £200, so Sive is forced to do their will , despite the disapproval of her Nanna.

This provocative and powerful play, inspired by real life events from the time, remains a stalwart of Ireland’s theatrical canon. With a final poignant scene bringing the play to a close, this play is guaranteed to stay in the memory long after the curtain has dropped.

The play is scheduled to run in the Hawk’s Well Theatre from April 2nd-5th, 2025. Booking is available here: https://www.hawkswell.com/whats-on/shows/sive via the Hawk’s Well Theatre website or at the Box Office on (071) 916 1518.

Ticket prices are €18/15 with a group rate of €12 for groups of six or more. There’s also a School Group Rate of €12 per student for bookings of 10 or more, including a free seat for an accompanying teacher.
