The Importance of Being Earnest
We are delighted to announce that our autumn 2024 production in the Hawk’s Well Theatre will be Oscar Wilde’s “The Importance of Being Earnest”, a Trivial Comedy for Serious People! We last performed this play in 1975, so it is high time that we dusted off the cobwebs and brought this highly entertaining costume drama to a new audience.
The play is set in England in the late 19th century where two young men, Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff adopt fictional identities in order to escape their social obligations. Jack invents a fictional brother called Ernest and Algernon invents an invalid friend called Bunbury. The pretense leads to a series of mistaken identities and clever wordplay.
The play is intended as a social commentary on the elite of Victorian society where hypocrisy and artificiality are the order of the day.
Featuring memorable characters, witty dialogue, clever satire and timeless humour, this production is set to be a surefire hit with Sligo audiences.
Máire Hynes has returned to the Director’s Chair for this production and she has assembled an experienced cast, many of whom will be familiar to Sligo Audiences: Algernon Moncrieff (Micheál Kearney), Jack Worthing (Roy Mitchell), Gwendolyn Fairfax (Orla Mc Sharry), Cecily Cardew (Meadhbh Murtagh), Lady Bracknell (Ann-Marie Byrne), Miss Laetitia Prism (Margaret Curley), Rev. Dr. Frederick Chasuble (Gerry Ryan) and Lane (Damien Quinn).
The play is scheduled to run in the Hawk’s Well Theatre from November 13-16. Booking is available here: https://www.hawkswell.com/whats-on/shows/the-importance-of-being-earnest via the Hawk’s Well Theatre website or at the Box Office on (071) 916 1518.
