Cathaoirleach Welcomes Drama Circle Return to Town Hall

Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council, Cllr. Tom Mac Sharry welcomed the return of Sligo Drama Circle to the Town Hall, on an occasion of historic significance for the Drama Circle.
Marking the opening performance of our “Yeats By Candlelight” production in Sligo Town Hall, the Cathaoirleach recalled how it was in this building that the very first performance of Sligo Drama Circle took place in 1956.
Cllr Mac Sharry said:
This occasion has a significance at so many different levels. From a historic perspective, it marks a poignant return for Sligo Drama Circle to a building where they rehearsed and performed for the people of Sligo.
I’m told the rehearsals took place in the Planning Section across the lobby, with performances staged in the Council Chamber on the first floor.
The presentation of the works of our most iconic poet in arguably our most important and historic building is a unique occurrence. It is in keeping with the rich and storied tradition of this fine building that the words of W. B. Yeats, which resonated within these walls many years ago, should again be spoken to entertain and enthral a new generation.
Can I commend our friends from Sligo Drama Circle on this unique production, especially Director Michael Leyden, Technical Director Fintan Whelan, and our three actors Damien Quinn, Orla Mac Sharry and Máire Hynes.
This afternoon’s performance is another important landmark in our combined efforts to promote and preserve the cultural legacy of Sligo’s most iconic literary figure.
