Sligo Drama Circle is delighted to announce its latest production to hit the stage this October – “Stolen Child”. Set in 1990, it tells the story of Angela Tierney, a young Dublin woman and her search to find her natural mother and to confront her own identity.

Enlisting the services of a private detective, Mick Treacy, Angela tracks down the mother who bore her and faces the reality of her discovery. What begins as a personal odyssey for Angela Tierney to discover the secrets of her family history, soon becomes a fascinating exploration of one of the darkest chapters in the history of modern Ireland.

Parallel to Angela’s quest is the heartbreaking personal story of Peggy, the mother, living alone in Manchester. She is faced with encountering the daughter who was taken away from her three decades earlier. Two persons seeking to find a semblance of meaning in their lives.

Director Michael Leyden has assembled an experienced cast for the play – Orla Mc Sharry plays the part of Angela; Máire Hynes plays the part of Peggy; newcomer Tom O’ Sullivan plays the part of Mick Tracey; Barry Deignan plays the part of Chris Harris.

“STOLEN CHILD”, written by Yvonne Quinn and Bairbre Ní Chaoimh, is very pertinent to the times we live in and the ongoing struggle Irish society has in confronting an uncomfortable past.

“Stolen Child” was acclaimed as an important and ground-breaking new play when first presented by Calypso Productions in 2002. It was one of the first works to explore the secret history of Ireland’s Industrial schools.

This play is tinged with a deep sadness throughout but has plenty of moments of humour, suspense and romance intertwined.  Exposing the horrific truths about institutions in Ireland, this play deals with many sensitive issues that have been swept under the carpet for generations.

“Stolen Child” will play in The Factory Performance Space for four performances: Wednesday 3rd – Saturday 6th October at 8pm. Tickets can be purchased through the Hawk’s Well Box Office on (071) 916 1518 or online at https://hawkswell.ticketsolve.com/shows/1173589997

There will be one performance of the play on Friday 12th October at 8pm in St. Brigid’s Hall, Tubbercurry. Tickets for this performance can be purchased on the door on the night.

There will also be one performance of the play on Friday 19th October at 8pm in The Glens Centre, Manorhamilton. Tickets for this performance can be purchased through The Glens Centre Box Office at (071) 985 5833.
