Drama Circle to Present 1916 Show
An historic first for Sligo Drama Circle will take place when we stage “Wasn’t it a Full Life” in Sligo Courthouse from Tuesday April 26th – Friday April 29th at 8:00 p.m in Sligo Courthouse. Based around the events of the 1916 Easter Rising, this piece has been specially researched and written by director, Michael Leyden.
The iconic Sligo Courthouse building has been the scene of much drama during the 20th Century and if a Rising had occurred in Sligo during Easter 1916 surely they would have commandeered the Courthouse! This makes this unique setting a fitting backdrop to the re-telling of the 1916 story.
In “Wasn’t It A Full Life”, we are presenting a re-imagining of key episodes during the 1916 Rising – moments, events and people, a chronological unfolding of the drama from April 24 – May 10.
We reflect on the context to the Rising, the people and events during the Rising, the consequences and execution of the leaders and some reflections from a distance. Using verbatim accounts of witnesses and imagined actions of participants, Sligo Drama Circle hope to bring alive the time and people.
Admission is free for all Citizens. North West Hospice will have 1916 candles for sale on the performance nights and we ask people to consider purchasing these candles or making a donation.
We are most grateful to the Courts Services, Brendan McDonald, Aoife Brennan and Niall Hopper for permission to use the Courthouse and facilitating the performances.
