Feis Shligigh’s Hughes Cup Competition
Many years ago, Sligo Drama Circle presented a cup to Feis Shligigh, the Hughes Cup, in memory of Charlie and Maggie Hughes. By all accounts, Charlie and Maggie were stalwarts of Sligo Unknown Players, the pre-cursor to the Drama Circle. A 1962 article in The Sligo Champion referred to the couple:
“Charlie and Margaret Hughes were the backbone of the Unknown Players ……. two whose names must always be remembered in Sligo whenever a play is staged.
The cup presented by the Drama Circle to Feis Shligigh was for senior drama, however over the last few years no entries were received for this category. With the permission of Sligo Drama Circle, Feis Shligigh has now organised a new competition for the Hughes Cup for the 2016 Feis.
The competition, commemorating the events of 1916, will be for a senior duologue – competitors over the age of 15 will be asked to render a portion of a scene from a play by one of the following authors; Sean O’Casey, WB Yeats, Padraic Pearse, Lady Gregory.
We look forward to seeing a new generation of actors competing for the Hughes Cup in Feis Shligigh 2016.
