The World’s Greatest Stage Success
A play opened in Sligo Town Hall last week which has never been off the stage, never been out of production, for 200 years. It is Oliver Goldsmith’s bewitching comedy “She Stoops to Conquer”. The script of “She Stoops to Conquer” was originally rejected by Garrick of Covent Garden. Garrick and Coleman were the leading names in London Theatre of the day. Dr, Goldsmith, Dr. Johnson and Sir Joshua Reynolds knew that “She Stoops to Conquer” was a great play, even before it was staged. And two centuries of turbulent stage have proved them right.
On Tuesday last, Pádraig Foran’s production of Goldsmith’s great comedy opened and will run each Tuesday and Thursday for four weeks. Though running in a dozen theatres around the world right now, this may be Sligo’s last time of seeing “She Stoops to Conquer” – for another half century. Doors open at 8pm.
