“Passes in the Night” – A Review
“Passes in the Night” by Kevin P. Grattan, which opened Sligo Drama Circle’s Summer Season, turned out to be a surprisingly controversial play which generated much discussion on the opening night. Some older people were shocked, thinking the events in the play were improbable. Most younger people, however, thoroughly enjoyed the play and were able to recognise themselves in the characters. This may be partly explained by the fact that it wasn’t until the performance on the second night (Thursday) that the cast warmed to their roles and were then better able to communicate over the footlights.
Lionel Gallagher, the producer, had a difficult task because there are limited variations of position and voice when the cast has only four people. However, he succeeded in keeping the play dynamic and exciting. John Caheny showed great sensitivity in his portrayal of Denis. Hi ability to see both the seriousness and the humour in the role keeps the character multi-dimensional. Billy Mulvaney exhibited much spirit as the brawling, comic Irish man, Fred. The revelation of his true character in the denouncement (sic) showed his versatility.
Deirdre Gallagher gave us her full range of acting ability in the role of Lauren. From coquette to seductress to bewildered and hurt loner, Deirdre played them all and played them well. Maureen Gallagher was also excellent as Rose. From naivete to anger, to disgust, to compassion, she made the character come alive. “Passes in the Night” continues on Tuesday and Thursday nights from now until 10th July.
