The History Boys
Sligo Drama Circle returns to the stage of the Hawk’s Well Theatre this March for its new production of Alan Bennett’s “The History Boys”. Set in a fictitious Sheffield Grammar school, the play centres itself around the plight of eight teenage boys who are trying to gain admission to Oxbridge. Showing the interaction between the students and their teachers, the play asks questions about adolescent life while also exposing teachers as having real lives, something often forgotten. One theatre critic admitted that “The History Boys” was “simply the funniest and most moving play I have ever read; it has the ability to make an audience laugh and cry at the same scene”.
In a new departure for Sligo Drama Circle, the play combines a strong youth presence in the roles of the eight schoolboys with faces familiar to Sligo audiences playing the adult roles. John Caheny, Peter Milne and Siobhán Terry along with newcomer Craig White take on the roles of the teachers at the school. This presents a huge challenge for the Drama Circle to combine the exuberance of youth with the experienced actors. However, under the direction of Máire Hynes, the play promises to be an entertaining night’s theatre.
“The History Boys” runs at the Hawk’s Well Theatre from Wednesday March 23rd to Saturday March 26th nightly at 8pm. Tickets are available from the Hawk’s Well Theatre Box Office on 916 1526 / 916 1518 priced at €14 (€10 concessions & OAP’s). Tickets can also be booked online at www.hawkswell.com More information on the production can be seen at www.sligodramacircle.ie
